South Amboy Community Events

Scholarship Available—  South Amboy ELKS—Elks Care, Elks Share Scholarship applications are now available.  One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving senior from each of the five area high schools: South Amboy, Sayreville, Perth Amboy, South River and Cardnial McCarrick.  For more information visit www.elks.org  and refer to Lodge #784 website or email susanapeterson@aol.com. Deadline for applications is May 1, 2012.

1st and 3rd Tuesday each month at 6 p.m.Knitting Circle- There will be a Knitting Circle on the first and third Tuesday each month at 6 p.m. at the Dowdell Library, 100 Harold G. Hoffman Plaza, South Amboy.  For more info call 732-721-6060.

3rd Thursday of each month starting at 12 NOON.— A.A.R.P. Meeting – The Sayreville Chapter #4853 of A.A.R.P. Meetings are held at the Sayreville Senior Center (Main St.) on the 3rd Thursday of each month starting at 12 NOON.  There are different informative speakers at each meeting.  Food and coffee are offered at reasonable prices.  Membership is $5 per year. New members are welcomed at every meeting.  Come and make some new friends.

Every Friday at 3:30 p.m. — Kidz Wii Club  –  The Kidz Wii Club will meet every Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Sadie Pope Dowdell Library, 100 Harold G. Hoffman Plaza,South Amboy.  For more info call 732-721-6060.

SATURDAYS English as Second Language Conversation Group12:30 to 1:30 pm at the Dowdell Library — A new English conversation group is starting for adults who would like to improve their English language conversation skills.  The group will meet on Saturdays starting Saturday, March 17 12:30 to 1:30 pm at the Dowdell Library, 100 Harold G. March 26 — Atlantic City Trip – The Sayreville Historical Society will have an Bus Trip to Atlantic City to Showboat Casino on Sunday, March 26. $30 Slot Cash Back, Bingo, 50/50 and snacks on the bus – movie on trip home. Bus leaves Sayreville Senior Center Parking Lot at 10:45 a.m. Returns approximately 8:30 p.m. Cost $35 (A $10 Deposit required by 3/17/12). March 28 – Bariatric Weight Loss Support – Raritan Bay Medical Center is sponsoring a Bariatric Weight Loss Support Group meeting Wednesday, March 28, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at its Old Bridge location. For individuals who have had weight loss surgery, are contemplating weight loss surgery or are trying to maintain a healthy weight. Family and friends are welcome.  The meeting will be held in the cafeteria in the Medical Arts Building, adjacent to the hospital on Ferry Rd. between Routes 9 & 18. March 317th Annual OLV Easter Friendship Meal —  There will be a Easter Friendship Meal at Our Lady of Victory Church, Msgr. Dalton Hall, Main St. Sayreville, on Saturday, March 31(Day before Palm Sunday) from 12 Noon to 2 p.m.  Eat in or Take Out.  This meal is provided FREE OF CHARGE (all food is donated) for anyone who would like to be in some friendly company… whatever the reason!  Bring a Friend! Delivery to homebound parishioners available (tell Paula).  Reservations must be made by calling Paula 732-257-0077 – No later than Monday, March 26.

April 7 — Breakfast with the Easter Bunny – Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at South Amboy ELKS, 601 Washington Ave on Sat. April 7th 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Includes Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Sausages, Hash Browns, Pancakes and More.  Adults $8, Children 8-12 $3, under 8-Free.  All Proceeds to benefit lodge charities. April 21 at 9 a.m. to South Amboy Fishing Beach! —Beach Sweep – Let’s make our beach something to be proud of again!  Come on Saturday, April 21 at 9 a.m. to South Amboy Fishing Beach!  Rain or Shine!  Bring your own rake if possible.  Work off your community service hours.  Eagle Scout Branden Lenahan, South Amboy Troop #91.  Any Questions ?  Email imlenahan16@gmail.com.

April 21“Celebrate Earth Day – Plant a Seed” — Dowdell Library: “Celebrate Earth Day – Plant a Seed,” which is an Earth Day program which will be presented by South Amboy Community Gardens on Monday, April 23rd from 3:30 – 4:30 pm.  Parents, introduce your child to planting a seed for a lifelong love of gardening!

April 21Sadie Pope Dowdell Library of South Amboy from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00“Sisters in Crime” author, Chelle Martin at the Dowdell Library of South Amboy!  Sisters in Crime will celebrate 25 years of working with librarians and booksellers in support of women writing crime fiction and will celebrate with a special event on Saturday, April 21 at the Sadie Pope Dowdell Library of South Amboy from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Chelle Martin will experience life as a librarian, so feel free to stop by and ask her about mystery writing or “Sisters in Crime!”

April 21All You Can Eat Filet Mignon Dinner—The Old Bridge Sayreville Rotary is hosting its 4th Annual Ultimate Beefsteak on Friday, April 21st.  Proceeds from this all you can eat filet mignon dinner will benefit area food banks. The event takes place at Sacred Heart Memorial Hall, located at Main Street and Washington Ave. in South Amboy.  Dinner is served promptly at 6:30 and the menu, catered by The Brownstone from “Real Housewives of New Jersey,” includes cold antipasto, sliced beef tenderloin, penne in tomato basil sauce, french fries, ice cream cake, coffee, tea, and soda. BYOB. Cost is $40 per person and tables of 10 can be reserved.  A comic and DJ will be on hand for your evening’s entertainment! Advance ticket sales only, and space is limited. MAY 2 — 90’s Birthday Bash – The Middlesex County Office of Aging & Disabled Services Cordially Invites Seniors, 90 and over to a celebration of life in their honor.  Wednesday, May 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Old Bridge Senior Center, George J.
