COMMUNITY VOICE: The Applicability of the Bill of Rights

Those who attack part of the Bill of Rights as “no longer applicable” are foolish. Claiming the ban on quartering soldiers in peacetime is not needed is wrong when this very ban prevents it from happening. Given that the right of the people to keep and bear arms is needed for their security, how can anyone claim this right is ever obsolete? Will they attack the right of the people to freedom of speech and of the press? Or the right of people to assemble and to demonstrate their concerns? What about the ban on unreasonable searches of people, their houses, papers, and effects? Or taking private property without just compensation?

Before the 1968 Gun Control Act many high schools and colleges had rifle teams as part of their sports activities. There were no criminal shootings in schools before the 1970s. There were no terrorist attacks either. Is there still a need for security in a free state by keeping and bearing arms? The statistics report an increase in crime and violence after the 1968 Gun Control Act became operative. Maybe political oppression is one cause of crime and violence, not inanimate tools.
