Fall Event: 3rd Annual Taste of Perth Amboy—Oct 2

PERTH AMBOY – Mark your calendars! Back by popular demand, the Friends of the Perth Amboy Free Public Library are doing it again. They are hosting the 3rd Annual Taste of Perth Amboy on October 2, 2012, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the St. Demetrios Community Center on Sadowski Parkway and Wisteria St. This delight to your taste buds will offer culinary samples from the many diverse restaurants, caterers, chocolatiers and fresh ice-creameries of our fair city. This event not only benefits the library but also the businesses of Perth Amboy, as people come from the surrounding area for an evening of food, fun, and friendship and get out of their comfort zone to try something new.

Last year. Everyone that attended liked the location for the seating capacity, size, parking and waterfront setting and the added surprise of the Greek dancers.

Last year, The Barge won for the best entrée serving London broil, salmon and bruschetta.

Fajii’s Ice Cream several flavors of ice cream and sorbet was a refreshing finish to the evening garnering Tom Griffin the certificate for the best dessert. People came back so many times, he ran out of spoons.

My first stop was Karini II for the Flan Cocho which Maria described when I asked her to participate. It was to die for and I have had it several times since. She also served garlic chicken and roast pork.

The New Coney Island served their famous hot dogs and fresh squeezed orange juice. Ed and Mary’s rolled cookies were a nice surprise and they also served stuffed cabbage and green beans and chicken.

Luigi’s served their great lasagna, Marios’s Pizzeria offered penne vodka, Pizzarelli’s- chicken rollatini, Seabra’s Armory provided their famous paella and Slavko’s Harborside walk his tasty crab cake sliders. Taqueria Rincon provided taquitos, Carvajal-empanadas, El Taco Loco-shrimp, chicken, and beef tacos, Tipico Vegano-pastelon, Healthy Choice Grill-wraps, brown rice, black beans, Terrazza-Cuban sandwiches and Masitas, Troy an abundance of their delicious appetizers including hummus and baba ghanoush, plus almond pudding.

Portuguese Manor delighted us with their well known favorites-garlic chicken, garlic shrimp and yellow rice.

Diamond Chinese served a favorite of mine, General Tso’s chicken.

Because we feel that all the participants were winners we are not planning a competition this year. There was so much to taste, that many attendees, including me, did not get to sample all the fine offerings. I have since made it my mission to try all of the restaurants. I still have a way to go as we have so many fine ones in this town of which many of us are unaware.

I invite those who participated to join us again and I would like others in the city to join us to add to the enjoyment. The Barge, Seabra’s Armory, Sugar Plum Palace, Aris Lounge and Karini II and Slavko’s Harborside Walk have already expressed their interest. This year will be even better as we plan a cash raffle, door prizes and a silent auction.
