American Pride Bait & Tackle Presents: The Fisherman’s Corner

PERTH AMBOY — Aside from the weather not being favorable, the fishing has been very good. Schools of bunker have been spotted throughout the bay close enough to snag a few. Local anglers reported many blues caught and enjoying the fight off the piers and beaches. With the heavy amount of blues in the water striped bass fishing has slowed down some.

Due the shallow waters in the bay the best time to catch striped bass would be early morning or nighttime. Live lining or fresh chunked bunker bait would be the bait of choice.

Boaters using umbrella rigs stretch 25’s and 30’s and have reported doing well with bass. Bob of the MaryAnn stated he live lined some bunker and had great successes in the bay.

Saturday fluke season opened. 5 fish at 17’1/2 inches is the modified regulation.

Because of the great bass and blue fishing fluke started off a little slow this year. Although many nice fish have been caught squid spearing and gulp minnows have been the baits of choice. Soon the shop will be stocking live killies – a fluke favorite.

The only factor that is common is the weather. Winds and choppy waters have deterred some anglers from some of the action but all local reports from Perth Amboy to the highlands are excellent for lots of catches.

I recently has a guest ask me are the fish safe to eat I said “yes they are seasonal fish so they don’t live here. They pass these waters on their yearly migration route then they’ll be gone till next season or back through in the fall.”

Recap:

Now that we got a little break from mother nature what a way to welcome it back then with some striped bass at the end of your line. So far blues been dominating most of the action. Nice to see stripers are making their way through. Fresh bait is the way to go. Bunker chunks and fresh clams have been the top sellers for the bass angler. Blue fish have been hitting metal. The krocodile poppers and diamond jigs, and anything florescent green have been flying off the shelf. Fluke fishing has proved to be well on its way. Local reports say for those fishing the main focus is the blue and the striper. American Pride is fully stocked with fresh fish and frozen bunker brought in daily and new tackle weekly. Spooling service is now available and remember the only thing between you and the fish is your line.

Remember keep your line fresh and your hooks sharp and always get your bait at American Pride Bait & Tackle. American Pride Bait & Tackle is located on 211 Front St., Perth Amboy.
