The Fisherman’s Report

By Eddie Gonzalez—

PERTH AMBOY – Unfortunately, the armory side pier has been closed off this week for repairs but it is said only for a short time. Luckily we have a few more and a nice beach to choose from. Speaking to the locals many didn’t know they were allowed on. I tend to favor being a old school sandspiker. Just prior to closing local fishing great Mr. Porter was doing his thing on the pier landing. The fish like a pro “way to go.” The bunker action has been great this keeping. The fish close arguably one of the best seasons in a long while for blues and bass. Great reports of fluke been coming in. Captain Vinnie of the Morning Dew was amazed. Keeper to throwback ratio: many boaters did well this week at the angle. The reach ammo: pier and the highlands are definitely worth giving a shot. The boats the kill. The train bridge and the point are good local spots worth checking out. XL spearing, squid strips Peruvian spearing, live killies, mackerel fillets along with gulp and spro buck tails have been proving lethal. Many schools of spearing been spotted near the piers and beach an easy catch for a umbrella or casting net.

Striped bass action has slowed down a bit with the water temps rising. Early bird or the night crew are reaping the rewards: fresh clams, big chunks of fresh bunker are the way to go. Boaters are using the stretch 25 and trolling umbrella rigs. Chartreuse have been working well around the channels, Staten Island, Great Kills, Keyport and Sandy Hook.

Big blue fish: the cocktail blues are making their way in to local waters. This week has seen quite a few with more on the way fresh chunk bunker being the bait of choice followed by artificials, spoons and poppers. Many are starting to gear up for some serious crabbing. With better weather fishing over all is looking great

Before your next fishing trip stop in at American Pride Bait and Tackle open 7 days fresh live and frozen just for you fresh this week. I had guest ask me about a boat safety class in Spanish.
