PERTH AMBOY – La Asuncion Parish invites all to join in the fun and the feast of foods at their 31st Annual Festival on the Church grounds, 777 Cortlandt Street, Perth Amboy. The Festival will be held on Friday, June 29 from 7 p.m. to Midnight and on Saturday June 30, from Noon to Midnight. On Saturday, for four hours, from Noon until 4 p.m., children, with a wrist band, can enjoy all the rides at a reduced rate of $20. To take advantage of this great bargain, a wrist band must be purchased in advance at the Church office up until 6 p.m. Friday, June 29. The Saturday Noon – 4 pm wrist band may also be purchased at the Carnival on Friday. The Office is located at 697 Cortlandt Street; please call the office at 732-442-0512.

Music Lovers will be enticed by the sounds of live bands both Friday and Saturday. Emcee of the event is radio personality Freddy Perez, of Radio 107.5. And there will be no down-time. When the bands rest, the crowd will be entertained by several different DJs. If you are so moved by the music, dancing is welcome. Children will be entertained by a clown and face painting for a fee will be offered.

The smell of foods will beckon and tantalize you, as there will be home-made Puerto Rican, Dominican and Mexican specialties including: roast pork and rice with gandules, chicken and pork shish kebabs (pinchos) as well as the tempting pastelillos, pasteles, bacalaitos, and alcapurria and tacos. And of course, no carnival is complete without the all American hot dogs and hamburgers. For those with a sweet tooth – enjoy funnel cakes, candy apples, cotton candy and ice cream. Sodas, water and the virgin pina colada truck will quench the thirsty visitor.

There will be a Cash Raffle each night and a large cash raffle with four winners that will be drawn the last night. Last year the top prize was over $6,000. The cost of tickets is $20 for the large cash raffle.

The Festival will begin with a Mass of Celebration and Thanksgiving offered by Msgr. John Gordon at La Asuncion Church at 6:00 pm. on Friday, June 29. This year, there is a lot to celebrate, reminisce about and look forward to, as it will be the last Festival celebrated as “The La Asuncion Festival.” The very next day, July 1, La Asuncion together with Holy Trinity and Our Lady of Hungary will be legally merged to form the new Parish of Most Holy Name of Jesus. Yet the Parishioners of La Asuncion exuberantly look forward to joining forces with the Parishioners of Holy Trinity and Our Lady of Hungary, to become a more vibrant parish family and enjoy an even bigger and more exciting Festival/Carnival next year. More information on the upcoming merger and ensuing Ceremonies and Celebrations will follow. The merger came as a result of the Metuchen Diocesan Renewal of the Church of Perth Amboy.

For those Catholics who attend the Festival on Saturday, June 30, several Masses, which fulfill the Sunday Mass obligation, are celebrated: 4 p.m. Mass (Spanish) at La Asuncion Church, adjacent to the Festival; and 5 p.m. Mass (English) at Holy Trinity Church, 315 Lawrie Street (a short distance away), and 6 p.m. Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, 188 Wayne Street (2 blocks away).
