Independence Day Activities

PERTH AMBOY & SOUTH AMBOY — Mayor Wilda Diaz announces the activities for Perth Amboy and South Amboy in celebration of Independence Day and the history of the Amboys. The Fireworks display is to be held on Tuesday, July 3rd at 9:20 p.m. in the Perth Amboy and South Amboy waterfront. In the event of heavy fog or inclement weather, a rain date is scheduled for Friday, July 6th.

“Many people have fond childhood memories of coming to visit the Perth Amboy waterfront to enjoy the fireworks with their families. This tradition has been absent for far too many years. I am pleased to be the Mayor, who finally brings back this exciting event. The support of Mayor Fred Henry of South Amboy and our private sponsors made this possible at no cost to the taxpayers,” said Mayor Wilda Diaz.

The 2012 historic milestones for the Amboy’s include:

• 250 year Anniversary of the construction of the Royal Governor’s Mansion also known as the Proprietary House by the British empire in Perth Amboy

• 100 year anniversary of the founding of the YMCA

• 100 year anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts

• 100 year anniversary of the first airmail flight in the unites States from South Amboy to Perth Amboy

• 50 year anniversary of the National Liberty Bell Ringing commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence at Perth Amboy City Hall Circle.

South Amboy: will be hosting a FREE concert beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Raritan Bay Waterfront Park John T. O’Leary Blvd. featuring:

• PACKAGE GOODS from 6:00 – 6:40 p.m.

• RETURN OF THE“BOMB SQUAD from 6:45 – 7:30 p.m.

• RORY KELLY’S TRIPLE THREAT from 7:45 – 9:00 p.m.

Free shuttle service to the park will be available from the NJ Transit parking lot. Please bring your lawn chair. For additional information on the South Amboy pre-fireworks concert, please contact events@southamboynj.gov.

Perth Amboy: will continue its festivities as done annually on July 4th, with the Ringing of the replica of the Liberty Bell, to memorialize the 236th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, as Perth Amboy was the capital of East Jersey. A procession from the Proprietary House located at 149 Kearny Avenue will begin at 12:30 p.m. and proceed to the bell ringing. The bell for the State of New Jersey is located in City Hall Circle in Perth Amboy (260 High Street) and is rung 13 times at 2:00 p.m., once ring for each of the 13 colonies.

Also, as provided by WCTC, music during the fireworks program will be broadcasted from Perth Amboy as resident will be able to enjoy a live feed of music and programming right if they tune in to WCTC 1450 AM or WMGQ, Magic 98.3.

Police Department Safety and Traffic Advisory:

• No public drinking, no swimming, no fishing and no parking where signs are posted. Perth Amboy beach area will be closed at 4: 00 p.m.

• State Law prohibits the use of personal fireworks

• Pets are strongly discouraged from being present during the fireworks performance. This is for both their safety and the safety of the general public.

Perth Amboy Traffic:

• High Street from Smith Street to Sadowski Parkway will be open only to local residents

• All traffic South of Lewis Street will be closed to the public

• Sadowski Parkway and Water Street to the Yacht Club will be posted as NO PARKING. Road will be closed to traffic at 6:00 pm

• Lewis Street will be One Way going West from High Street to Second Street; only open to local traffic

• Paterson Street will be One Way going East from Second Street to State Street; only open to local traffic.
