Fun Facts About Perth Amboy

1.  The first African-American to vote under the 15th Amendment was Perth Amboy resident Thomas Mundy Peterson who cast his historic vote on March 31, 1870 in a local election on whether or not to revise or give up the city charter.

2.  Aaron Burr supposedly came to Perth Amboy after his duel with Alexander Hamilton. He stayed at the Truxtun house on July 22, 1804 and had coffee on his way to Cranbury and Philadelphia.

3.  On July 2, 1844, Perth Amboy born resident Commodore Lawrence Kearny laid the foundation for the open door trade policy with China.

4.  On June 1, 1863, Dr. Solomon Andrews flew his dirigible, the Aereon over Perth Amboy. He was able to steer his airship using aerodynamics and without a motor.

5. The famous utopian community The Raritan Bay Union and its famous school Eagleswood was located in Perth Amboy from 1853 – 1868.
