Abusing the Doctrine of Necessity?

Please allow me to make a few comments regarding the Perth Amboy Board of Education. It would seem to me that there are some Board members that wish to make the Board their own little fiefdom. Members should realize there is but one Education professional on the Board, and that is the Superintendent of Schools. No elected member of the Board is considered to be a profession in the field of Education. Board members should be citizens of the community who may set policy, but most important of all act on the recommendations of the Superintendent. Board members do not “run” the district – the Superintendent does. The Superintendent follows the guidelines and mandates set by the County and the State. He or she may also accept the advice and suggestion of the Board.

On the subject of the Doctrine of Necessity. While a valuable tool, it should be used only in the matters of Extreme importance. It should not be used over and over again until one gets the result they seek. This doctrine makes an otherwise illegal vote legal. Members in conflict use this tool to vote. I have an opinion that if one is a conflict with one item, they may be in conflict with another, if not all matters to come before the Board.

On the subject of closed sessions. Closed sessions are just a way of trying to get members to see things as a majority group. Closed sessions can certainly be private, but once the matter is resolved, it must be reported to the public.

In conclusion, let the Superintendent do her job. If you are in conflict, reconsider your position. Stop this ego trip and get down to business of the Board. If anyone has an agenda other than a thorough and efficient education for our community. Step down.

Remember, a term is three years. Next election you may be out. The next Board will start anew.
