COMMUNITY VOICE: It Sure Does Get Confusing

Although Perth Amboy has non-partisan municipal elections, our candidates for the most part still register as belonging to a party. Usually we ally ourselves with the party that has a philosophy and candidates we identify with. No one can argue that we all have the right and that decision should be respected even if we disagree over which party. In Perth Amboy we have politicians who have changed parties, either through evolving beliefs or perhaps through political expedience.

The fact is we do not have to tell anyone who we actually vote for but if you register identifying a political party that decision is public. Our Mayor, Wilda Diaz is a registered Democrat, but has been closely identified with Governor Christie – so much that residents wonder why she just doesn’t change parties. Now information has been discovered that one of Wilda’s running mates has been making political contributions to a Republican presidential candidate.

To be clear anyone can make a contribution to anyone regardless of party affiliation except in this case Wilda’s running mate also states in her bio that she is a 23 year Perth Amboy Democratic Committee woman. I believe that when you run for this position you are not representing the public – you are representing the Democrats. That is where your allegiance has been pledged. That allegiance is not partial, it is total. The Mayor, her running mate and others in her inner circle are confusing us. Make it public record Wilda, and be transparent. It’s okay if you are a Republican – just come out and say it.
