Fatal Motorcycle Accident

SAYREVILLE — A Sayreville man was killed and a South River woman critically injured early today when the motorcycle they were riding struck a curb on Route 9, sending the couple skidding off the vehicle, police said.

Nicholas Karcich, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 12:31 a.m. crash.

Karcich was driving south on Route 9 when he lost control of the motorcycle about 500 feet north of Bordentown Avenue. The 2012 blue Harley Davidson skidded about 225 down the highway, and Karcich and his passenger, Angela Bongiovi, 28, of South River, slid 175 feet.

Both victims were wearing helmets, but they were not state Department of Transportation-approved headgear.

Bongiovi was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where she was admitted for treatment. Her current medical condition is unknown at this time

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police ask anybody with information about the accident to call traffic safety officers at (732) 525-5431.
