Pension Pains

Allen Papp

PERTH AMBOY — City Attorney Allen Papp who has tried cases in Perth Amboy municipal court for thirty years came before the Council on September 24. He placed on the railing a thick folder and in that folder was a letter mailed to him that stated benefits that he had been receiving would be terminated. Papp could not understand why this was happening, especially after City Attorney Mark Blunda was approved for benefits.

Business Administrator Greg Fehrenbach said a revised letter would be sent to Papp and other attorneys who were sent termination letters.

Mark Blunda

Fehrenbach said City Attorney Mark Blunda withdrew from the City Pension system. Papp also stated that the information of the ruling given by the courts in regards to this matter was incomplete and inaccurate.

Papp also stated that he doesn’t blame the attorneys for the inaccuracies in the initial letter he received about termination of his benefits.

“I’ve been a City employee for thirty years and discontinued my private insurance after twenty-five years.”

Councilman Kenneth Gonzalez who is also a City Attorney said we should look at all of the attorneys that have been in the City’s court system for many years who he believes should be entitled to keep the benefits they have.

At the September 26 Council Meeting Papp said that anyone who got letters stating that their medical benefits would be terminated can appeal this decision.

Councilman K. Gonzalez agreed that we should protect individuals that are vested in the system, even if the ones that are retired such as Papp.
