Perth Amboy Fire Severely Damages 3 Homes

By Joe Bayona—

PERTH AMBOY — A blaze broke out on Sunday night that severely damaged 3 homes on Elizabeth Street in Perth Amboy.

According to fire Chief David Volk, the call came into the fire department at approximately 8:30 PM. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire in the rear of 609 Elizabeth St., a vacant building. The flames quickly spread to adjoining structures at 611 and 613 Elizabeth St. At one point the flames were so intense that they completely incinerated a wooden fence that stood between the properties of 609 and 611. A boat that was on a trailer in the back yard of 611 Elizabeth St. was also destroyed.

Additional units from Sayreville and South Amboy were called to the scene to fight the 5 hour blaze. An additional unit from Sayreville as well as one each from Woodbridge and Colonia were called in to standby at central fire headquarters.

There were no injuries reported, but 12 people found themselves homeless. None of the 12 needed relocation as they were going to stay with relatives.

Chief Volk credits firefighters with a good stop, keeping the fire from spreading even further than it did given the head start the blaze had before their arrival.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
