Metuchen’s MLK Breakfast—Jan. 20

METUCHEN — The Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce, YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge, & South Amboy, New Hope Baptist Church, and Second Baptist Church have joined together to offer an opportunity for the community to unite in a “Weekend of Celebration” to honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The annual interfaith community celebration will begin on Sunday, January 20th, at 3:30 p.m, at New Hope Baptist Church located at 45 Hampton Street in Metuchen. The service will include choir selections, youth recitations, remarks and reflections from local clergy and other special guests. A free will offering will be collected to benefit the MLK High School Senior Scholarship Program. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the program. For more information about Sunday’s event, contact New Hope Baptist Church at 732-549-8941.

The weekend celebration will wrap up on Monday, January 21st, at the 6th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast to be held at the Pines Manor, 2085 Route 27 in Edison. We are proud to announce that this year’s special guest is former Rutgers Football player and author, Eric LeGrand who will participate in a moderated Q&A with the audience led by Middlesex County Sheriff and 2012 Keynote Speaker, Mildred “Millie” Scott. In October 2010, LeGrand suffered severe spinal cord injuries on-field during a Rutgers vs. Army game at MetLife Stadium that left him paralyzed. Though doctors believed he’d be a quadriplegic and on a respirator for the rest of his life, within five weeks he had resumed breathing on his own and continues to work towards his goal of walking again. In September 2012, he released a book, “Believe: My Faith and the Tackle That Changed My Life,” also available in a young-readers’ edition, which will be available for purchase during the event. LeGrand has turned his tragedy into an inspirational story and his determination serves as a great example for both the young and old.

Guest speakers will also include four local middle school children that will read their winning essays from this year’s essay contest. In the spirit of Dr. King, student essays will explore modern day leaders, who holding firm to their beliefs, displayed acts of courage in their lives in order to bring people together to make a difference in their community. Musical entertainment will feature the uplifting and harmonious voices of local choir members who have come together to form the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Choir. Come join us for this inspirational event!

The breakfast will feature a hot buffet and will run from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. Reservations are a must! Tickets will be required for admittance and may be purchased by visiting the Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce office (323 Main St., Metuchen) or by downloading and submitting a registration form which will be posted on the Chamber website at www.metuchenchamberexchange.com. Ticket prices are: $25 for Adults and $15 for Children 12 and under. Please note that ticket requests not made in person must be received in the Chamber office by January 15, 2013. All proceeds will be donated to the YMCA Send a Kid to Camp Program. Sponsorships are available.
