Resident Alan Silber Questions if Jobs Will Be Lost

PERTH AMBOY — At the March 25, 2013 Caucus Meeting Alan Silber went before the Council to ask if people will be eliminated from the Department of Public Works because the newly automated garbage pickups.

Business Administrator Greg Fehrenbach said, “There were no layoffs and that positions that became vacant were not filled.

Silber said, “You can let people go and still hurt the economy.”

City Attorney Mark Blunda said, “Large number of disabilities are in Public Works and Sanitation with people exceeding the amount of garbage in their cans. These injuries have included broken backs when DPW workers lift them.”

Councilman Bill Petrick said, “With the new automated cans, we can get more credit for recycling. The whole town cannot have automatic garbage pickup so we will still need the three manned garbage trucks to be used in these areas.”
