PERTH AMBOY — Mayor Wilda Diaz is pleased to announce the NJ Transit Board’s approval of $2,051,128 for the completion of the final design and engineering services for the Perth Amboy Train Station Accessibility Improvements Project.

Mayor Diaz was joined by Senator Joseph Vitale; Chief of Staff of the Office of Assemblyman John Wisniewksi’s, Perth Amboy residents and train riders, who delivered their statements during the public portion of the meeting held earlier today.

“Since 2008 I have been advocating for our station’s upgrades, including ADA compliance. I am so thankful to those who shared their personal experience and comments before the board expressing the importance of these renovations. This ensures the safety and best service to all residents and visitors,” said Mayor Wilda Diaz.

Thirty percent of the conceptual design was completed by the end of 2012. In an effort to renovate and create barrier-free accessibility the design focuses on establishing an ADA compliant station, in addition to overall facility improvements. The contractual amendment will allow for full completion to finalize the design in approximately 18 months.

The redesign of the plan includes the preservation of the 1920’s historical architecture design and features, as it is listed under the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. NJ Transit will re-configure the station platforms to provide a single center island high-level platform and canopy with a new elevator between street-level and platform-level that service both Eastbound and Westbound trains.

As stated by NJ Transit, the project will also upgrade customer amenities with new platform-level waiting areas, communications system and will speed passenger boarding by eliminating the need to climb stairs to board a train. Finally, the project will include modifications to the station building and parking lot to make the station fully accessible.
