EDITORIAL: Sugar Plum Palace Closes Up Shop

PERTH AMBOY – Although the Sugar Plum Palace opened up 30 years ago, I only became aware of it seven years ago, when I started working for the Amboy Beacon. I would go there with the late Bill George when he would stop by to pick up an ad or purchase sweet treats for different holidays. Owner Carol Bilas would often engage us in delightful conversations.

When the Amboy Guardian was delivered to the Sugar Plum Palace on December 18, 2013, Carol told us about the wonderful time she and her daughter and one of her daughter’s friends had in New York when they went to see the musical A Night With Janis Joplin.

Carol’s smile was from ear to ear and her eyes twinkled when she talked about the good time they had that day. There was one particular song that Carol loved by Joplin called Mercedes Benz. Carol was disappointed when the musical was about to end and the song had not been performed. Little did she know that when the actress portraying Joplin came out for her encore, Mercedes Benz was the encore song.

30 Years of happy memories. Good luck, Carol!

I told Carol, “You were probably dancing in the aisles when that happened.” Come to think of it, Carol didn’t acknowledge if that was a “yes” or a “no.” She did mention that she would love to see the musical again. Now that she has more time, when she sees it again, maybe I’ll tag along with her. Then we can both dance up and down the aisles together.

P.S. Thanks for all the goodie bags!
