SOUTH AMBOY – A resolution awarding a contract for Pupek Road improvements was part of the consent agenda at last week’s South Amboy council meeting.

The city will begin improvements on Pupek, thanks to a Department of Transportation (DOT) grant as well as city contributions.

Business Administrator Camille Tooker explained details of the project and said it would begin shortly.

“The project will consist of repaving the road and replacing the handicap curbing,” Tooker said. “[The project] should be starting shortly and it’s a good thing because we have been waiting to get this done.”

Lancha Construction Corporation of South River was awarded the contract from the city after a bid of $404,541.40. They were one of four bidders on the project that were reviewed by City Engineer Mark Rasimowicz before a decision was made.

Councilwomen Christine Noble and Zusette Dato both praised the cities of South Amboy and Perth Amboy for a job well done on the Fourth of July fireworks display. Dato thanked everyone involved and thought the event went off without a hitch.

“I thought that a lot of praises are deserved by our fireworks committee…the people who went out to get donations to get that underway… and particularly to the police and fire department,” Dato said. “I know it’s difficult to plan it and we had weather problems…as for as I know it went very well and everyone involved deserves a lot of praise.”

Tooker also took the time during public comments to express the council and city’s condolences to the family and friends of Jersey City police officer Melvin Santiago. Officer Santiago was shot and killed while responding to a report of an armed robbery at a drug store last week.

“Mayor Henry could not be here tonight but he asked me to offer the condolences of the council and the people of South Amboy to the people of Jersey City especially the family and friends of Officer Santiago.”

Mayor Henry and councilmen Mickey Gross were not in attendance. The next city council meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 20th at 7 p.m.
