PERTH AMBOY – During the 9/23/14 Board of Education meeting there was a discussion about some of the items on the agenda regarding the curriculum.

One topic of discussion was an After-School and Saturday Detention program. Acting Superintendent Dr. Vivian Rodriguez read from a statement from High School Principal Dr. Nester Collazzo regarding this matter. It stated that all teachers and staff will be on the main campuses. Detention will be 90 minutes on weekdays and 120 minutes on Saturday mornings. Board Member Maria Garcia was concerned that students would be doing nothing and therefore being unproductive during detention. Rodriguez advised Garcia that students will be provided with necessary materials.

The ALEKS math web-based program was another topic of discussion. Board President Obi Gonzalez explained that this year a much smaller program is being utilized than the one that was used last year. “It works very well when used with fidelity. In the past, teachers chose not to use it.”

Dr. Rodriguez then explained that it will be used as an enrichment program at the learning center in order to help students improve their skills.”

There was a discussion on a vocabulary workshop conducted by Marzano Research Associates at the McGinnis School. Dr. Garcia, who was present at the Board Meeting stated that there will be a half day session with substitutes covering for the teachers that day.

There was an item on the agenda for the approval to adopt Board of Education short and long term goals for the 2014-2015 school year. Dr. Rodriguez was pleased to see this item on the agenda.
