Perth Amboy Man Charged In Homicide

News Release 10/16/14

PERTH AMBOY – Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Benjamin Ruiz of the Perth Amboy Police Department announced today that a city man has been arrested and charged with fatally stabbing another city resident, whose body was found in the woods earlier this week.

Wilbert Hernandez, 34, of Perth Amboy was charged on the evening of October 15, 2014 with the murder of Ramon Lugo, 35.

Hernandez also was charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

He is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick, waiting for bail to be set.

Hernandez was arrested and charged following an intensive investigation by Detective Carlos Rodriguez of the Perth Amboy Police Department and Detective Jeffrey Temple of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The investigation determined that the murder was not a random act and that the two men knew each other. The investigation further showed that the victim was robbed.

Police were alerted when a passerby saw the victim in a wooded section off of Washington Avenue in Perth Amboy.

An autopsy by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the victim had been fatally stabbed.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Rodriguez of the Perth Amboy Police Department at (732) 324-3836, or Detective Temple of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3373.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Hernandez are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
