PERTH AMBOY – Resident Dot Daniel always had a fascination with bridges. She remembers watching the construction of the new bridge that would replace the old Victory Bridge which connects the Amboy’s and Sayreville. As it neared its completion, she knew that new bridge would attract those who had suicidal intentions.

Daniel was correct. She recalled going before the Council under the Vas administration about her concerns of the lack of barriers on the new bridge. Back then, the administration expressed little interest in the situation.

Ms. Daniel was an integral part of the Domestic Violence Response Team. She cared very much about those who might attempt to take their lives on that bridge. She was equally concerned for the safety of those who attempted to rescue or retrieve jumpers.

Daniel recalled the brave act of the late Woodbridge Township Police Officer Alvin Williams. In 1979 Williams drowned while trying to rescue two young children. All three drowned when they were overcome by turbulent waters in an overflowing creek in Woodbridge.

Mayor Diaz has been petitioning for fencing on the Victory Bridge from the time she took office. Diaz was pleased that Jamie Fox, who is the new DOT Commissioner acted quickly after meeting with her and Senator Joe Vitale.

The start of the installation of the fencing will begin sometime this month.

Ms. Daniel was overjoyed that finally after almost 10 years and countless heartaches something that should have been done a long time ago was finally coming into fruition. She mentioned that after one of the first suicides that took place on the bridge, that local resident and frequent writer to the newspapers, Peter Book backed up what Dot Daniel had originally predicted.

As we receive more information, we will provide updates on our website/publication.
