SOUTH AMBOY – The ordinance adopting the Beach Club District Redevelopment Plan was introduced at the 12/3/14 South Amboy Business Meeting.

The Manhattan Beach Club would bring nearly 1,750 luxury units as well as close to 90 affordable housing units and space for commercial use to South Amboy. While residents have questioned the plan since it was introduced by the South Amboy Redevelopment Agency, Mayor Fred Henry was very excited for the project to get moving.

“We’re taking the first step in redeveloping our waterfront area,” Henry said.  “It is a very good project that is going to transform South Amboy…There is still a lot of work to be done but we will continue doing it.”

Henry added that the ordinance is up on first reading and that there will be a second reading later which will allow the public to comment and ask questions to the council. He also noted the recommendations and discussion that has already come about the project.

Construction would begin in 2015 with up to 300 units being added. The Manhattan Beach Club presentation is available for viewing on the city’s website on the SARA page.

Business Administrator Camille Tooker also discussed details on the re-examination of the city’s Master Plan. The Master Plan is the planning framework that shapes the city’s physical, social, environmental, and economic future.

“The Master Plan should be re-examined every 10 years…the last time it was done was in 2004,” Tooker said. “We would like to begin the process of looking to bring someone in and re-examine the master plan.”

Councilwoman Christine Noble filled in for Council President Joseph Connors who was not in attendance. All other council members were present for the business meeting.

The next city council meeting will be held December 17th at 7:00 p.m.
