PERTH AMBOY – Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Benjamin Ruiz of the Perth Amboy Police Department announced a man and a woman sought for attacking another couple in Perth Amboy were apprehended today in The Bronx.

Jesus Gonzalez, 35, and Jashira Figueroa, 25, are being held by police in New York after being arrested at about 2 p.m. today at the home of a relative of one of the defendants.

They were apprehended by members of the U.S. Marshals Service New York and New Jersey Regional Task Force.

It was not immediately known when the defendants will be returned to New Jersey, where they have been charged with attacking the couple on Smith Street in Perth Amboy at about 3 p.m. on December 10, 2014.

Gonzalez has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. Figueroa was charged with aggravated assault.

The charges were filed during an investigation by Detective Andreea Capraru of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Detective Sandy Rivera of the Perth Amboy Police Department.

The investigation determined that Gonzalez and Figueroa confronted another couple on Smith Street. Gonzalez stabbed and beat the 29-year-old man, and then kicked and stomped the 25-year-old female victim, who also was severely beaten by Figueroa.

The attack did not appear to be a random act.

The victims were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where they were treated for their injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Capraru of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-4274, or Detective Rivera of the Perth Amboy Police Department at 732-324-3856.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Gonzalez and Figueroa are merely accusations and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Questions may be directed to Jim O’Neill, public information officer, at 732-745-3300.
