About the NAACP Perth Amboy Area Branch

The NAACP Perth Amboy branch was organized on September 8, 1941 in response to increasing discrimination, racial prejudice, and unjust policy. In response to heightened violence and hostility during the 1940’s through the 1970’s, members of the branch joined forces with students and civil rights/labor activists from Carteret, Perth Amboy, Sayreville, South Amboy, and Woodbridge Township to conduct mass demonstrations such as boycotts, walkouts, sit-ins, protest marches, and picket lines.

For nearly 75 years, the branch built and grew on the collective courage of men, women, and young adults who decided to stand firm and strong to champion what’s right and just. People of all races, nationalities, and faiths united on one premise—that “all men and women are created equal”; thus changing America’s history. Despite violence, intimidation, and hostile government policies, the NAACP and its grass-roots membership persevered. We pushed and continue to push America to fulfill its promise of equal rights for all.
