PERTH AMBOY – An Ordinance to amend an ordinance entitled “Pawnbrokers” (Ordinance No. 415 and amendments) adopted October 16, 1899 also known as Chapter 313 Et Seq of the Code of the City of Perth Amboy.

Councilman Fernando Irizarry was concerned that if Pawnshops were allowed to operate in the City, it would bring in the wrong kind of elements. He said, “Perth Amboy has a crime problem with drugs and burglaries. I feel that the pawnshops will just add to this.”

Councilman Joel Pabon told Irizarry, “We can’t lump all pawnshops into one group. We need businesses coming into our town.”

Acting Police Chief Larry Cattano came forward to let Councilman Irizarry know that we already have pawnshops in town and those establishments have a set of criteria to abide by (The Police Department and City Ordinances).

Council President Lisa Nanton suggested, “We should pass this ordinance now. Then we can come back and look at revisions later.”
