4/22/15 Council Meeting
PERTH AMBOY – Communication 8: Joseph B. Vas, on behalf of himself and tenants and owners of the Perth Amboy Commons located on Rector Street and High Street between Smith and Fayette Streets requesting that the meters be removed in the areas of High and Fayette Streets or that residential decals authorizing parking be issued.
During the public portion, J.B. Vas argued that all of the City Buildings that were located in that area (Police Department, Courthouse and First Aid Squad) are now closed. “The Rector Street side has no meters there.” He questioned why meters on the residential side of High Street are still there. “Residents have to feed the meters up until 6 p.m. I can understand the part of High Street where the Rosengarten Properties are located having meters. There is a larger concentration of commercial buildings there, most which have their own parking. Visitors who drive their cars to the residential properties have a hard time parking because of the meters. Some time ago there were a need for meters because the town homes that are there now were not built yet.”
Former Councilman Kenneth Balut came up to speak and drew a chuckle for those in attendance when he said, “I usually don’t agree with Vas about anything, but I totally agree with him in this case. Other residents can get personalized spaces in front of their homes. Why not those on High Street?”
In the past, Balut has said, “Any resident that has meters in front of their homes should get residential permits.”
A Rector Street Resident came up to speak, “I don’t understand why there are meters in front of resident’s homes on High Street. It doesn’t make sense that you constantly have to feed the meters in front of your house. A lot of people wind up parking on my street where there are no meters. This makes parking hard for the residents who live there.”
Council President Lisa Nanton remarked, “ The Police Department and Parking Utility are working together to gather data. They’re looking at all of High Street to see what would be a feasible solution.”
Councilman Joel Pabon was absent due to illness.
