PERTH AMBOY – The newly formed Perth Amboy Arts Council partnered with the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts to host a tour by Perth Amboy High School art students of their current exhibition at the school’s gallery in New Brunswick.

Over 30 students, a guidance counselor and their art teacher, Olga Bautista, also the Board of Education representative on the Council, spent the day viewing a full gallery exhibit of the Visual Arts Thesis projects from the graduating senior class. The students viewed paintings, photography, sculpture, graphic designs and murals.  All of the projects used art as a way to deliver a message unique to each artist.  This year’s exhibition theme was “Ladies Night” and actually included a custom-designed Neon sign created by the graduates.

As part of the private tour for the Perth Amboy students, many of the Rutgers MGSA artists were on hand to talk with the students about their techniques and the goals of their projects. The students offered a wealth of questions and the artists were delighted to provide as much information as time permitted.  Of particular interest was how the artists had to research and write a paper on the subject, and then propose a plan on how their art was going to deliver their message.  When the students checked out each project, comments could be heard ranging from “I get it!!!” to “What’s this??”, and it was apparent that there was a real connection between the students and the artists.

Following the gallery tour and discussions, the students were given a tour of the complete Mason Gross Visual Arts Department.  The students got to see painting studios (with some work in progress), printmaking shops, sculpture studios, photography, including the old fashioned darkrooms (which turned out to be a big favorite), and production facilities. Since the University was still in session, the students also got to observe artists and professors working together on several different projects.

Following the tour of the School of Art, the students participated in a question and answer session with their host, Visual Arts Department Administrator Cassandra Oliveras-Moreno, also a Perth Amboy resident. The group discussed admission requirements for the University and the MGSA in particular, and how to build and prepare a student’s very important and required Visual Art portfolio.

The Perth Amboy Arts Council hopes to work with the Perth Amboy Board of Education and Rutgers University to further this partnership so that this visits to the Visual Arts Thesis Exhibits can be a yearly event.
