PERTH AMBOY, NJ – The NAACP Perth Amboy Area Branch lost a devoted social justice solider and freedom fighter Ms. Louise Garrison, 3rd Vice President on Thursday, July 9, 2015. Ms. Garrison is a true pillar in the community that was dedicated to the mission of the NAACP and worked with youth for decades to attain equity and justice. Ms. Garrison was instrumental in recruiting membership, organizing youth civic protest to attain equity in employment in the school district, and leading youth in the March on Washington in 1963. Her legacy of leadership will continue to inspire us all as we realize this work of the NAACP is just as important today as it was more than hundred years ago.

“With the recent tragedies in Charleston and deaths of unarmed black males we must work together to make sure that everyone values the lives of our children. There is definitely a greater sense of urgency and increased momentum nationwide to tackle injustice in America,” says Elizabeth Williams-Riley, Branch President.

Elizabeth is joined by Melvinia Knight, 1st Vice Chair; Angelene Fleming, 2nd Vice Chair; Janice Clark, Secretary; Brenda Gumbs, Assistant Secretary; Angelo Adkins, Treasurer; and Inez Adkins, Assistant Treasurer and members of the NAACP in expressing our sincere condolences to the family of our beloved Ms. Louise Garrison. Funeral Services were held Thursday, July 16, 11 a.m. at Cathedral International, 277 Madison Avenue, Perth Amboy.

To honor her rich legacy and great work the family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the NAACP Perth Amboy Branch, P.O. Box 1219, Perth Amboy, N.J. 08862-1219.

The greatest act of kindness that we can do is to make sure that the torch she carried is passed on and not extinguished. Join the NAACP today and make a difference tomorrow. www.naacp-perthamboyarea.org

About the NAACP Perth Amboy Area Branch:

The NAACP Perth Amboy branch was organized on September 8, 1941 in response to increasing discrimination, racial prejudice and unjust policy. In response to heightened violence and hostility during the 1940’s through the 1970’s, members of the branch joined forces with 2 students and civil rights/labor activists from Carteret, Perth Amboy, Sayreville, South Amboy and Woodbridge Township to conduct mass demonstrations such as boycotts, walkouts, sit-ins, protest marches and picket lines.

For nearly 75 years, the branch built and grew on the collective courage of men, women and young adults who decided to stand firm and strong to champion what’s right and just. People of all races, nationalities and faiths united on one premise—that “all men and women are created equal”; thus changing America’s history. Despite violence, intimidation and hostile government policies, the NAACP and its grass-roots membership persevered. We pushed and continue to push America to fulfill its promise of equal rights for all.
