There were 2 TV Series with a character Gomer Pyle. Gomer Pyle appeared in the Andy Griffith Show which was located in a fictitious town called Mayberry. A few years later, the Gomer Pyle character joined the marines and appeared in a show named after the character.

One of Pyle’s trademark phrases was, “Surprise! Suprise! Suprise!” whenever something crazy or unusual happened or was said.

Some people are now going a little bit cuckoo because Perth Amboy’s Mayor Diaz stated that she is seriously thinking about seeking a third term. In the past she had declared that she would impose a two term limit for herself. Well, “Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!”

Wilda Diaz is not the only politician to have a change of heart.

On September 11, 2001 the attack on the World Trade Center happened on the same date as the New York Mayoral Primary. This election was to select the Democratic and Republican Candidates to Succeed Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Due to this tragedy the Primary was delayed for 2 weeks and took place on September 25, 2001. Due to the circumstances Giuliani requested a 3 month extension of his term to expire on April 1, 2002 instead of January 1, 2002. He thought about challenging the law imposing the term limits on New York City Officials and considered running for another full term. This was if the candidates running in the primary did not consent to permit the extension of his term of office.

Both the Assembly and Senate did not believe the extension was necessary and Michael Bloomberg took office on January 1, 2002.

But when it came to the end of Bloomberg’s time in office, Bloomberg challenged the four year – two term law and just barely was re-elected for his third term running as an Independent.

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!

A few years ago I remember watching a movie that had to do with a women’s organization who thought Beauty Pageants degraded women. The plot of this movie was to have one of its members enter a State Beauty Contest. The catch was if that member won the contest, they were to denounce it. That person did win the contest, and when her name  was called and that crown was put on her head, she started to cry. She realized at that moment that she really wanted that crown, the perks, the fame and to be recognized for her beauty. A moment later, the camera panned to the audience and captured the anger and the mouthing of disgust from the women in that organization. One of the words that were mouthed to the woman who won the contest was, “Traitor.” Sometime you don’t know what you want until you actually get it.

The bottom line is, perhaps it’s best not to state what your intentions are. This way it can’t come back to bite you in the butt.

When you are elected to certain positions, there is always going to be ongoing projects that you would like to see come to completion before your term in office is up.

Look at some of these politicians. It seems as they have been in office since birth.

This is a suggestion to all the people who are going nuts because the Mayor is seeking a third term: Don’t get all bent out of shape. Don’t have a case of the vapors (Google Golden Girls Character Blanche Devereaux).

She is not unique nor is she the first person to change her mind, nor will she be the last. Remember there was a law on the books and Bloomberg overturned it thinking only he could save New York.

You, the voters will decide who will be the future Mayor of Perth Amboy. End of Story. Have a good day.  C.M.
