EDITORIAL: What is Stopping Them?

December 7, 1941 was Pearl Harbor Day. This past Monday marks the 74th Anniversary of that fatal attack on the United States. Imperial Japan launched fighter planes  and bombed Pearl Harbor, prompting the United States to enter WWII. 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded in the Pearl Harbor attack.

For today’s generation, 9-11 was our Pearl Harbor. When the 9-11 attack occurred, the United States realized that those terrorists attacks were a wake up call. We need to take action.

Last week, in our editorial we addressed our views about the influx of Syrian Refugees. Our main concern was the security of American Citizens.

Little did we know that a few days later there would be a terrorist attack claiming the lives of 14 people in San Bernardino, California.

We both admit that this terrorist attack in California and the one in Paris, France killing  at least 130 people got us a little spooked.

People should stop pretending that these were mentally ill people or disgruntled employees. We believe both these attacks were organized and long planned.

When you have someone as ultra liberal as Senator Dianne Feinstein (D) of California stating to CNN, “I think there are sleeper cells not only in France but certainly in other countries and, yes, in our own,” you know this is a serious problem.

We do not have enough manpower in all the States and in all the Cities to fight off multiple attacks.

Everyone knows the major targets: New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles but it’s scary when terrorist target sleepy, peaceful Norman Rockwell-like  Communities.

That is what the scary part is:  all the major transportation areas will beef up security in major cities. But, the smallest  towns are not afforded the same level of security or any security at all and the terrorists know this. You can draw your own conclusions.

In San Bernardino, neighbors of that couple were very suspicious of the activities going in and out of the terrorists’ house. The neighbors feared being called bigots out trumped their concerns for reporting suspicious activities. That’ a shame.

The race card, when it comes to terrorism is the card that is going to be the biggest weakness of the Untied States. If being called a bigot will possibly prevent a terrorist attack, we will gladly wear that title.

In previous editorials, it was mentioned that every single one of us is profiled in one way or another. You don’t know even realize it sometimes. Ever do an internet search for  anything, even if it’s not for you? Google or whomever browser you use is going to be sending you email or flyers on specific products that they believe you are interested in. Be careful when you sign up for mailing lists. You many not know what you’re getting into.

Even politicians profile all the time. How many politicians reach out to certain ethnic groups or certain minorities. It’s called garnering.

Be aware of your surroundings: If you see something, say something. Cliche, but it’s true. One thing I would never want to happen is having known that I saw something and did nothing. It would be a shock to see a headline a few days later that the people that I saw acting suspicious carried out a terrorist attack. This would haunt me for the rest of my life.

Don’t let them catch us with our pants down again. We are hoping that the public will aid the authorities to prevent future plots. They will try to attack again, when we don’t expect it. Remember, they are very patient, calculating, and their greatest glory is to die for their cause.  When you are dealing with terrorists, all bets are off.  C.M. & K.M.
