City ID Program Discussed

IDcard1/27/16 Council Meeting

PERTH AMBOY – Resident Ken Balut asked Councilman Irizarry asked if he knew the cost of the ID Program. Balut further stated, “There will be a lot of personnel involved. (Recreation, Secretarial Staff and Security) The poor taxpayers will foot the bill. I sat on the Council and raised taxes although I thought it was the most disgusting thing I had to do. I thought we would get the relief from the Chevron deal.”

Resident Susan Batista came up to speak about this program, “Did the language get changed? It said it was a license on the ordinance. Will the staff be multilingual? The Polish are another ethnic group in town as are the Asian People.”

Councilman Irizarry assured Ms. Batista that the language has been changed to identify this as an identification card program – not a license.

Resident David Caba wanted to know if the ID would apply to anybody. Council President Lisa Nanton answered, “You have to be a resident and have to pay a fee.”

Caba then said, “Homeland Security was in the City recently.”

Councilman Irizarry told Caba, “The Perth Amboy City Identification Card does not carry the same weight as a Federal ID.”

Council President Nanton said, “Monthly reports will give us an idea about the cost.”

Caba continued, “Would every bank accept this ID?”

Irizarry retorted, “It will be up to the bank.”

Caba ended by saying, “I needed to know this information in case I lose my passport if I could use my Municipal ID.”
