PERTH AMBOY – 3/10/16 Board of Education Meeting Board Member Milady Tejeda spoke about an event that took place on March 5, 2016 at the Patten School. The Richardson School came to the Patten School to participate. Milady said, “A woman came to speak about the role of mothers when a family breaks down. This woman had a daughter who passed away on graduation day.” Tejeda spoke on  how an emotional and passionate a speaker this woman was.”

Board of Education President Samuel Lebreault said that Superintendent Roman also was at this event. Lebreault stated that Roman told him that  the Board of Education should have this woman speak at one of the Board Meetings. This woman’s daughter was killed in a car accident the day of her graduation. The woman was so impressed by the students who were present when she spoke in Perth Amboy that she wants to send 50 kids to the symposium that her organization will be having soon.”

Superintendent Dr. David Roman spoke, “This woman was eloquent, especially when telling the story of how important moms are. Perhaps she should speak around the time when the schools schedule Project Graduation.”

Board Member Tejeda told those in attendance that there are tickets available to have 100 students go to the symposium.”

PTO President Donna Stewart came up to speak, “Any presentations involving students should be made at the beginning of the meeting It was nice that students were honored for achieving high scores on the PARCC Exam, but I’ve been coming to the Meetings for eight years and the A.P. students who have high scores have never been recognized. We also have a lot of money coming in to our budget from different types of funding. When new schools are built, all resources for them should already be in place. The PTO had an assembly with the woman who lost her son involving a drunk driver two years ago. There were Juniors and Seniors present when that woman spoke two years ago. No Board Members attended. We have been involved in something like this, not to take anything away from the woman who spoke at the assembly.”

Stewart also was displeased that Mr. Mosely would be going. “My son said, “Finally there was an administrator who connected with the students.” Stewart also gave kudos to Mrs. Green who is in charge of the Black History Club. “During Black History Month, she was in charge of an inspiring and moving program. Nobody from the Board of Education came. I know the majority of students in the schools are Hispanic, but we should support other minority groups, too.”

After Stewart spoke, Board of Education President Sam Lebreault spoke and said, “Many of us work during the day and it’s hard to attend a lot of the activities.”

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Vivian Rodriguez said, “I have attended Black History programs in the past, but this year when it took place I was out of town.”
