Community Celebrates by Collecting Food Items on
Saturday, August 27 to Help Those in Need
PERTH AMBOY – Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz (back row, right side) and students from I Excel Child Care Center at 165 Washington Street hold signs and food items to remind everyone to attend the City’s “Block Party with a Purpose” on Saturday, August 27 beginning at 11 a.m. The community can celebrate together and donate non-perishable food items to help restock the shelves of the City’s food pantries. Adults and children of all ages are invited to New Brunswick Avenue, between Madison and Maple Streets, for the “Block Party with a Purpose” that includes free hot dogs, inflatable slides and rides, a balloon artist and performances by dance groups. Perth Amboy’s C-Town Supermarket, Quisqueya Foodmarket, Supremo Supermarket and Tropical Supermarket are giving the food drive a big boost by donating products. The “Block Party” is sponsored by the Perth Amboy Business Improvement District (BID), the City’s Recreation Department, Renovation House, Lighthouse Worship Center, and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

PERTH AMBOY– Historic Perth Amboy, Mayor Wilda Diaz and the City’s Business Improvement District (BID) are hosting a “Block Party with a Purpose.” By joining together and donating groceries, the community can restock Perth Amboy’s food pantries. The event is free and everyone is invited to the New Brunswick Business District, where people of all ages can enjoy many fun activities.
The “Block Party with a Purpose” is scheduled for Saturday, August 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along New Brunswick Avenue, between Madison and Maple streets, in Perth Amboy. Block party volunteers and visitors can also shop and dine at nearby retailers and restaurants.
The celebration was created to assist people who often struggle to put enough nourishing food on their family’s table. Mayor Diaz encourages everyone to attend and bring nonperishable items so there are more healthy choices in food pantries.
At the same time, the block party will feature inflatable rides and slides for children. Renovation House is serving up hot dogs for all. Also, party goers can enjoy refreshments, take home a balloon sculpture and view performances by dance groups. Additionally, parents and children can build “food towers” by carefully stacking the donated cans, boxes and containers.
At the “Block Party with a Purpose,” all the contributions will go to Perth Amboy’s food pantries. Typically, the demand for food items at local pantries exceeds the supply. In late summer, feeding programs face critical shortages, as food inventories dwindle and shelves become empty.
The Mayor’s “Block Party with a Purpose” is getting a big boost with food donations from Perth Amboy’s: C-Town Supermarket, 272 Maple Street; Quisqueya Foodmarket, 249 Madison Street; Supremo Supermarket, 270 King Street; and Tropical Supermarket, 442 Smith Street.
Also, volunteers from the nonprofit Lighthouse Worship Center and Renovation House will be at the event to lend a helping hand. Block Party sponsors also include the Perth Amboy Recreation Department and Business Improvement District as well as St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
