Candidates Applaud Legislation to Keep Board of Ed Elections in November

Press Release 8/24/16

PERTH AMBOY – The Stronger Together slate of Board of Education candidates and Mayor Wilda Diaz held a joint press conference on August 24, 2016 to praise the passage of legislation requiring the city’s school board elections to be held in November.

Convery told followers at the rally that, “after multiple attempts by the current board to move the elections to a time known to have lower voter turnout, and add more expenses for taxpayers, I’m glad that the legislature has insured that more people will participate in our democracy and Perth Amboy will get an opportunity to elect candidates with the best interest of their children as their top priority.”

Iglesia said that, “the parent and children in Perth Amboy deserve a strong Board of Education that places the best interest of our children ahead of their own. The current board has failed all of us and this November parents will have an opportunity to change that by electing three new board members. We hope to have a strong voter turnout.”

Vazquez said, “the Board of Education elections often get overlooked and get low voter turnout, as a candidate who wants to improve education for all of the children in Perth Amboy I am glad to see more patents will get to decide their children’s future this November. I look forward to fighting for a better education for all of our children.” Vazquez continued, our children are not political puns and it is time for our Board of Education to stop playing politics with them, and to place the education of Perth Amboy children ahead of their political gains.”

Mayor Wilda Diaz said, “we are please the Legislature acted to keep the Board of Education elections in November, not only does it save the taxpayers money, but more importantly November elections typically have a higher voter turnout, involving more of our voters. The current Board of Education seems to be happy with excluding voters and spending taxpayers’ money unnecessarily, but this is fiscally irresponsible and anti-democratic.”

Election Day is November 8.
