On October 28, 2015 my editorial was titled, “A Sure Thing.” This editorial talked about the Pink Ribbon Gala (held on the Cornucopia St. Charles in Perth Amboy) which benefited Mary’s Place By The Sea (Ocean Grove, New Jersey). I mentioned how much I appreciated all of those who supported this event and made it successful.  I need to refresh everyone’s memory about the importance of Mary’s Place by the Sea.

Mary’s Place by the Sea was  the brainchild of Michele Gannon who was soon joined by her friend Maria McKeon.

Located in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, this non-profit facility is a special retreat for women who are currently in treatment for cancer.

What makes Mary’s Place so special, is that when women go there, they are not charged for the room, meals (breakfast and lunch only) or therapeutic services that they receive during their stay (up to two nights/three days).

The original four bedroom Mary’s Place by the Sea House has been a retreat for over 5000 women since the house was opened up in 2009.

Because of the number of women who wished to stay at Mary’s Place for a relaxing environment, a larger facility was needed. Ground-breaking of a new facility began in May 2014. The dream of the new ten bedroom house became a reality with the ribbon cutting in early June of this year.

We wish to thank the Organizers, Committee Members, Businesses and Individuals who raised funds, donated goods and services and bought tickets to the Pink Ribbon Gala of 2015. The Founders of Mary’s Place were very appreciative of your support. We realized some would not be able to attend this year’s Pink Ribbon Gala but still would like to help in any way they can.

This year, we have added boosters and ads for those who wish to make a donation. As a non-profit, Mary’s Place by the Sea is grateful for any donations to defray the cost of operating the facility. Tickets are available by contacting Committee Members or see the ad for the Pink Ribbon Gala on Page 9. Some people have purchased tickets and then donated those tickets to someone they know is a cancer survivor or currently under treatment for cancer.

We urge you to visit the website www.marysplacebythesea.org so you can see and hear testimonials of women who have stayed there.

On a personal note, My grandmother, mother and sister all died from various forms of cancer. I only wish there was a Mary’s Place that they could have gone to before cancer took their lives.

The 2016 Pink Ribbon Gala will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 on the Riverboat St. Charles, Perth Amboy. We’re looking forward to having a bigger and better turnout and we hope to see you there. C.M.
