Press Release 9/23/16

PERTH AMBOY– Destruction caused by Super Storm Sandy inspired Historic Perth Amboy to rebuild, be stronger and always take action to enhance its beautiful waterfront.

On Saturday, October 8, Mayor Wilda Diaz and honored guests will celebrate the successful completion of major improvements to the City’s waterfront. Leaders from government, business and many organizations are honoring the highly motivated people who made the wonderful waterfront recovery a reality. Everyone is invited to “Discover the Perth Amboy Waterfront” during ceremonies held at the new Bay View Park Promenade on Front Street at 11 am.

The Mayor, the Waterfront Redevelopment and Recovery Advisory Committee, and local officials are recognizing the incredible support Perth Amboy received from leaders in Middlesex County, the State of New Jersey, and the United States Government. The Mayor is thanking all of the individuals, local businesses, City employees, resident volunteers and nonprofit organizations that assisted with the rebuilding effort.

Before the ceremonies, Perth Amboy’s Recreation Department has scheduled a Pink Ribbon Walk along the waterfront beginning at 10 AM. Everyone is invited to stroll along the Harbor Walk, and the activity is free. Donations are encouraged, and the contributions will go to nonprofits funding breast cancer research or early-detection programs for all women.

Immediately following the Mayor’s ceremonies, the City will celebrate its milestone achievement by hosting the Waterfront Harvest Fest.

Also, a free event for the entire community and everyone is welcome. The Perth Amboy Recreation Department is organizing activities for children including hay rides, pumpkin picking and painting, colorful face art, pie eating contest, and much more in Bay View Park.

Mayor Diaz said, “We are gathering to celebrate and gratefully acknowledge the people and organizations that helped us achieve an incredible victory – the revival of our incredible waterfront. We invite neighbors from near and far to visit our amazing City – where they can shop, dine and enjoy themselves.”

The celebration marks the transformation of Perth Amboy’s waterfront. Hundreds of people worked non-stop for four years to beautifully restore waterfront’s marina, harbor-side walkway, beaches, water view restaurants, local businesses, recreation areas and parks. The City’s employees as well as engineers, general and sub-contractors, electricians, builders, masons, carpenters, and skilled construction workers rebuilt the waterfront.

The “Discover the Perth Amboy Waterfront” event celebrates the efforts of everyone who contributed their time, talent, materials, or supplies to reconstruct and redevelop the City’s most valuable resource.

In addition, the engineering, modern construction methods and many improvements will help reduce the impact to the waterfront from similar storms.

The Mayor added, “We are unsure of what the future holds, but we have seen the amazing results when people work together to rebuild after a devastating storm.”

Throughout the day, activities include:

• Pumpkin picking and painting

• Custom face art

• Pie eating contest

• Hayride Tours of Historic Sites

• Fireboats with colorful, water displays

• Armada of sailboats & yachts tacking across Raritan Bay

• Music by D.J. and live performances
