SOUTH AMBOY – South Amboy Mayor Fred Henry reported that he and Freeholder Director Ronald Rios recently evaluated the famous “Hole-in-the-Wall”.

Resident Pete Kenny asked about the current status of the tunnel at last Wednesday’s city council meeting. Mayor Henry explained that a letter had been sent a letter to Conrail with a report of their findings.

“We took a quick walkthrough and [Director Rios] observed that it is obviously in disrepair,”

Mayor Henry said. “They sent [Conrail] a letter saying that something has to be done with it, they gave them some time, they didn’t respond. They sent them another letter and [Director Rios] told me that they will go to court with Conrail if they don’t do something about it.”

The Hole-in-the-Wall connects Stevens Avenue and Ridgeway Avenue near Route 35. The narrow roadway serves as a tunnel that goes under six to eight railroad tracks.

The City Council also sent their congratulations to the South Amboy Arts District, which had their grand opening earlier this month.

“I’d like to congratulate the Arts District for their grand opening which they had last Saturday Night,” Councilwoman Zusette Dato said. “There was a lot of good coverage, a lot of people from the arts were there to see what was going on and lend support. I think it’s very exciting for our city.”

“I had the opportunity to go over there Saturday and it really was terrific,” Councilman Tom Reilly said. “It was music, it was arts, it was everything I thought it would be and more than that. We’ve got a lot of talented people on this committee and I think there’s going to be a lot of good things coming.”

Business Administrator Camille Tooker added that will be an official ribbon cutting ceremony at the Arts District’s main office on October 27th which will be followed by an open house.

Councilman Donald Applegate was not in attendance for the council meeting. The next city council meeting will be held on October 19th at 7 p.m.
