PERTH AMBOY – Mayor Wilda Diaz is pleased to announce the appointment of Captain Roman McKeon as Acting Chief of Police for the City of Perth Amboy, effective today.
“Today, we take one more step towards continuing to strengthen our public safety in the City of Perth Amboy. I am pleased to appoint Captain Roman McKeon as Acting Chief of Police, an officer who has served this community for nearly 30 years and is dedicated to improving quality of life and the safety for all residents.”
Acting Chief Roman McKeon joined the Perth Amboy Police Department in 1988. Prior to joining the department McKeon served as an Auxiliary Police Officer in the Township of Edison from 1984-1985. McKeon graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice in 1985 from Glassboro College. He later graduated from the Middlesex County Police Academy in 1986 and served as a police officer for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ).
As a career Patrol Officer, he served as the department’s first certified field training officer for new recruits. McKeon was later promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2003, Lieutenant in 2005 and to Captain in 2015 to serve in the patrol division after being assigned to the Support Service Division.
Acting Chief McKeon has attended numerous advanced training schools. Throughout his career he served as a firearms instructor, police baton (PR-24 – instructor), certified commander of the departmental SWAT team, as well as the range master for several years.
Apart from his 28 years of law enforcement experience he is also involved in the community and currently serves as the Perth Amboy Police Chaplain Corps liaison. He also received the 200 Club Lifesaving Award for saving a suicidal jumper and has received several mayoral citations for outstanding service.
Acting Chief McKeon takes great pride in being a mentor to the officers in the department and in his ability to guide them through the challenges in 21st century policing.
