PERTH AMBOY – Recently, two 1683 Society Trustees, Norman Vazquez and John Dyke, met with Mayor Wilda Diaz to discuss the 1683 Society vision and to begin developing a working relationship with City officials. The 1683 Society Inc is a neighborhood nonprofit corporation comprised of like-minded homeowners and renters of the waterfront district in Perth Amboy.

In my travels, whenever I speak with people about Perth Amboy, the reaction is usually negative.   We are here to change that perception,” advised Norman Vazquez, 1683 Society President.   “That is why we formed the 1683 Society.   The 1683 Society is designed to promote a high quality of life and preserve our historic neighborhood.”

“Our name comes from the year in which Perth Amboy was founded by the East Jersey Proprietors.  And we take pride in the fact that our hometown has been around for centuries”, remarked John Kerry Dyke, a 1683 Society Trustee.  “We intend to do good things as we have a great group of neighbors and a well organized steering committee.  It’s a really nice team.”

Throughout the meeting with Mayor Wilda Diaz, accompanied by Lissette Martinez, Director of the City’s Office On Aging, Mr. Vazquez and Mr. Dyke laid the groundwork that will allow the 1683 Society to meet its mission.  Future plans were discussed.   “Our Mayor was receptive to our ideas and we look forward to working with the Mayor and her Directors”, stated Mr. Dyke.
