Art Leader Asks Why Concert Was Changed

5/10/17 Council Meeting

PERTH AMBOY – Caroline Pozycki-Torres, President of the Perth Amboy Artworks, was concerned why a concert that she had planned to kick off her music series on June 10, 2017 was to be rescheduled.

She started out by telling the Council, “I am happy to report that I received my first grant for the Ferry Slip Music Series. I had filled out the application and when I turned it in, they said because of a clerical error, my event could not be held on the date I requested which is June 10, 2017. There was no other events being held at the Ferry Slip on that date or time. I had already sent out a signed contract with the band that was supposed to perform on the June 10th date. This is the same day as one of the dates that the Puerto Rican Festival which is being held on the other side of town. Even Kenny Ortiz (Director of the Department of Recreation) where I got the application said that the band that I booked (for the Ferry Slip Music Series) would compliment the Puerto Rican Festival. The band that we booked is also a Puerto Rican Band.”

Business Administrator Adam Cruz told Pozycki-Torres, “It could be a matter of security. The Puerto Rican Festival may need a lot of security which will not give us enough officers to cover your event.”

Council President Bill Petrick was confused by that statement, “If a Festival takes that much of our resources (security), that it makes other parts of the town vulnerable, then we shouldn’t have it.”

Councilman Fernando Gonzalez said, “I agree with Council President Petrick.”

Pozycki-Torres continued, “The application that I filled out was submitted to the Department of Recreation, and then from there to the Mayor’s Office.”

Councilman Joel Pabon commented, “The Ferry Slip Music Festival will compliment the Puerto Rican Festival and one will not take away from the other. You are talking about 2 events far away from each other.”

Pozycki-Torres said, “In the past, we’ve had 2 Auxiliary Police at our event.”

Petrick said, “We don’t have a problem with your event being held on June 10, 2017. He then asked B.A. Cruz to look into this.
