PERTH AMBOY – On Saturday June 3 at 3:00 p.m., the “Thomas Mundy Peterson Medal Presentation” will take place at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Rector Street, Perth Amboy.

After more than forty years, Peterson’s gold medal is back in Perth Amboy. Peterson was awarded this medal by the local citizens for being the first African American to vote under the 15th Amendment. That vote took place in Perth Amboy City Hall on March 31, 1870. It was a historic landmark vote.

“It is an honor and a privilege to hold this medal, as well as have it back in Perth Amboy” stated Dorothy Carty-Daniel, chairperson of the event. “It is on loan to us from Xavier University and will be on display during our presentation.”

“During the 19th Century, and even up to the present day, many communities have attempted to stop African Americans from voting.   Perth Amboy is different, that is, we encouraged the right to vote” advised local businessman & historian John Kerry Dyke.   “The Thomas Mundy Peterson medal is more than just an award. It represents the efforts of all good people that want to enfranchise America’s voters. It embodies the concept that all men are created equal.”

Congressman Frank Pallone & Mayor Wilda Diaz are the featured speakers for the June 3rd event.  A splendid time is guaranteed for all & all are invited to attend.
