Breaking Records And Winning Medals

Two Perth Amboy Swim Teams That are Making Waves

Press Release 6/12/17

PERTH AMBOY – This past weekend, two swim teams based out of the Raritan Bay Area YMCA put everything they had into their competitions. The RBAY Masters swim team and the Perth Amboy Piranhas, a Special Olympics swim team, both took home gold and gave everything they had. While the Masters Swim team competed in the Senior Games in Birmingham, Alabama, the Perth Amboy Piranhas swam their hearts out during the 2017 Special Olympics Summer Games at the College of New Jersey. Both teams did exceptionally well, and one even broke a record.

During the 2017 Senior National Games, four swimmers from the RBAY Masters team competed and made personal best times. One, Sue Freeman-Patterson, won 3 ribbions in the 65-69 age group while also breaking the New Jersey State Record for the 50 meter Freestyle. Freeman-Patterson is a long time member of the Raritan Bay Area YMCA and Masters swim team.

Closer to home, the Perth Amboy Piranhas entered 23 athletes in this years 2017 Special Olympics Summer Games. While official times have not been released yet, all swimmers received medals and many placed in first, second or third for their divisions. All coaches and family members are extremely proud of each athlete and many speculate that two swimmers may have a chance to go to the 2018 USA Games.

“All teams have worked so hard to get to where they are now. We could not be more proud of each swimmer and look forward to their continued success” says CEO Steve Job of the Raritan Bay Area YMCA.
