Perth Amboy Police Youth Academy 2017 Graduates

Press Release 8/7/17

PERTH AMBOY — Mayor Wilda Diaz, Police Chief Roman McKeon and the Perth Amboy Police Department congratulate the graduating Class of 2017 for the Perth Amboy Police Youth Academy.

The Perth Amboy Police Department launched the youth academy for the first time this year to teach youth about law enforcement and the work and training of a police officer.

The academy was held from Monday, July 31st – Friday, August 4th  and was comprised of classes and training on internet safety, CPR, mock crime scene investigation, survival swimming and rescue, community policing, safety briefing, simulation training, K9 demonstration and Perth Amboy Fire Department drills.

“Mind over matter!” exclaimed Academy Instructor and Police Officer Danny Gonzalez—“If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

A total of 18 participants were drilled with that phrase during the week long academy, including– Adrianna Arroyo, David Blot, Kevin Blot, Daniel J. Bailey, Yazminelly Cardona, Erika Chuchuca, Marina E. Cuello, Karina Y. Diaz, Angelica M. Mendez, Delmin Munoz, Kevin G. Negro, Ronald E. Negro, Joseph J. Pacheco, Jorge Pena, Jacob M. Rivera, Stephano Rivera, Eric D. Sandoval, and Leeyah E. Scott.

During the awards presentation held on Friday, August 4th, Cadet Karina Y. Diaz delivered a speech that ironically allowed her to face one of her fears head-on, public speaking.

“Before I was appointed to do this speech, I was thinking of points to make about what we’ve experienced and the only thing that made me hesitant to execute this was my fear of speaking publically. This is what these amazing instructors have taught us. The only limits we have are the limits we place upon ourselves.”

“We admire all of these instructors, as well as anyone here who took their time to educate us and make us better, more confident, respectful people, not only for ourselves, but for our families, for our community, as well. We are all leaving here with something that we will remember for the rest of our lives,” said Cadet Diaz.

“I am extremely proud of our children and our Police Department. These officers took the time to directly develop relationships with our youth, provide law enforcement training and an experience that they will never forget. This is one of the greatest benefits of community policing,” said Mayor Wilda Diaz.

There are nearly a dozen active Community Policing Programs that set the framework and standard of community partnerships for all ages, including the Perth Amboy Police Cadets, Child Safety Seat, Senior Fraud, Safe Routes School, Project Lifesaver programs and most importantly, the work of our Auxiliary Officers.

The Perth Amboy Police Department has been recognized numerous times for their efforts in the area of Community Policing including, the 2017 Attorney General Awards for Outstanding Community Policing and in 2016 the Perth Amboy Auxiliary Division was recognized by the State Attorney General as a model program.  Most recently, the Perth Amboy Police Department was awarded $10,000 by the Detective Matthew L. Tarentino Community Policing Grant Program to be used in October for Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s largest anti-drug campaign.

“The purpose of community policing is to develop partnerships with our schools, businesses and houses of worship within our community to help bridge the gap of communication between community and police. I want to personally thank all of my staff involved in making this possible for our community, Lieutenant Michelle McKeon, Sergeant Rick Zaleski, Sergeant Emma Cabrera, Police Officer Danny Gonzalez, Detective Riscardo Rosado and Ret. Detective Jesus Martinez, on behalf of the department, thank you,” said Chief Roman McKeon.
