PERTH AMBOY – Perth Amboy Artworks will host the finale of their second season of the Live at the Ferry Slip Music Series on Saturday October 7th from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at the Perth Amboy Ferry Slip, 300 Front St. The free concert at the waterfront is a family friendly event. The season finale will be a celebration of Hispanic Heritage featuring performances by Segunda Quimbamba and United States of Boogaloo. Come out and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with these two great NJ bands!

Segunda Quimbamba is a Jersey City based dance and drum ensemble that perform authentic bomba and plena, the vibrant drum music of Puerto Rico. Band director Juan Cartagena and his wife Nanette Hernandez founded Segunda Quimbamba in 1989. Juan Cartagena is a recognized master folk artist by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Segunda Quimbamba has performed at festivals, concert series and venues throughout NJ, NY & PA and has also toured internationally. Their recent CD called EXPERIMENTAL y TRADICIONAL, pays homage to 2 strands that define the Puerto Rican diaspora “the traditions that color our youth, our memories, and our mother’s cooking; and the modern musical influences that color our language, our dance and the rhythms in America.”

United States of Boogaloo, founded in Jersey City in 2012, perform Spanish-English songs fusing Boogaloo, Punk, Salsa, Rockabilly, Samba, and Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena music.  Their self-titled album recorded in Kray’s Studios in Weehawken, NJ features originals that air on independent radio stations in NJ. They have performed regularly at festivals and venues around the State. The band delivers percussion-heavy songs with lyrics (sung in Spanish and English) inspired by member’s upbringing in NJ and a deep respect for their Latin American heritage. Members developed their style interests from having played in punk rock bands for over 20 and having also performed in the Puerto Rican Folk band Segunda Quimbamba. Band member BJ Torres lives in Perth Amboy and is a Vice President of the Perth Amboy Arts Council.

“The Ferry Slip Music Series brings together our community to celebrate Perth Amboy,” said Caroline Pozycki-Torres, President of Perth Amboy Artworks.  “This year we have seen our highest attendance, with excited neighbors walking to the show and visitors from outside the City coming to enjoy high quality music in the beautiful setting of the Ferry Slip on the waterfront.  We try to incorporate art into everything we do, from posters designed by local artists, to hiring local photographers to share the fun of the event, to hiring the best NJ based original independent performers who really love being part of creating and celebrating community. We thank Mayor Wilda Diaz, the County Freeholders, the City Council, the City Administration, The NJ State Council on the Arts, the Auxiliary Police, the Ferry Slip Board, our sponsors, the community, the performers, photographers, designers and volunteers who all made this the best season yet at the Ferry Slip,” said Caroline.  The 2017 Live at the Ferry Slip Music Series has featured performances this summer by Destitute NJ, I4, San Simon, GMJ Groove, Joseph Frame and Proper (pictured).  For more information about the October 7th concert and Perth Amboy Artworks, visit their website at www.PerthAmboyArtworks.org or call 732-877-3800.
