Stop by the Dowdell Library in February on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for Family Lego Maze. Build the craziest and wackiest maze out of Legos and guide your marble through to the end. We’ll supply the Legos, you supply the maze outline!

Bingo/Tricky Tray

Meet the Author: Scott M. Deitche
FORDS – Author Scott M. Deitche is originally from Fords! His newest book is “Garden State Gangland; The Rise of the Mob in New Jersey”. Meet him at the Fords Branch Library on Saturday, February 10 at 11 am.
Scott is the author of seven other books on organized crime. He has written dozens of articles on organized crime for local and national magazines and newspapers. Scott has been featured on The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, A&E, C-SPAN, Oxygen and both national and local news and radio shows. Scott currently lives in St. Petersburg, FL. with his family.

Civil War Roundtable
WOODBRIDGE – In honor of black history month, the Robert E Lee Civil War Roundtable will be hosting a presentation on black soldiers in the Civil War. The event will be held on Saturday February 10, 2018 from 10 am to 2 pm. The event will be held at the Robert E Lee Civil War Library located at 94 Green Street in Woodbridge. Book Discussion Group Classic Movie Night: The Group

WOODBRIDGE – The Woodbridge Public Library Book Discussion Group will present a classic movie night at the Main Library on Monday, February 12 at 7 p.m. Come enjoy a free presentation of the social satire “The Group.”
“The Group” was directed by Sidney Lumet and was adapted from Mary McCarthy’s novel of the same name. It focuses on the lives and changing roles of eight Vassar girls, Class of 1933. The film stars Candice Bergen, Joan Hackett, Elizabeth Hartman, Shirley Knight, Jessica Walter, Kathleen Widdoes, and Joanna Pettet. Also appearing in it are Hal Holbrook, Carrie Nye, James Broderick, Larry Hagman and Richard Mulligan.
Shocking in its day, the film touches on such taboo topics as mental illness, free love and abortion. Sharp and precise, it describes the complicated worlds of driven, educated young women in the years before WWII.

Why Didn’t I Learn This Before? Unlearning Myths of Race and Racism

WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP – In this presentation, being held at the Woodbridge Main Library on Thursday, February 15 at 7:00 PM, Dr. Karen Gaffney will share a few key concepts from her new book, Dismantling the Racism Machine: A Manual and Toolbox. Her goal is to raise awareness about the false beliefs that perpetuate racism, especially the myths often taught to white people that need to be unlearned. There will also be plenty of time for discussion.
Dr. Karen Gaffney is Professor of English at Raritan Valley Community College, where she teaches Race in American Literature and Popular Culture. As a white anti-racist educator, she presents her work at conferences and in community workshops, as well as in her blog with resources Divided No Longer (available at www.dividednolonger.com). Her book, Dismantling the Racism Machine: A Manual and Toolbox, is an accessible and interdisciplinary introduction to race and racism with tools for action.

Lent Fish Fry
PERTH AMBOY – St. John Paul II Parish is sponsoring a Fish Fry Fundraiser on Friday, February 16, 2018 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. It will be held at Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima Church at 188 Wayne Street. Take-out is also available. The menu is either fried or broiled fish or pierogis, salad, coleslaw, French fries and Spanish rice. NJ Rock Band Mikell’s Plot to Perform at Chess Tournament
PARSIPPANY – NJ Rock Band Mikell’s Plot will perform at the World/US Amateur Team East Chess Tournament. Lead Singer Michael O’Connor will participate in the chess tournament on Saturday, February 17, at the Parsippany Hilton, 1 Hilton Court, Parsippany, NJ 07054. O’Connor has been an amateur chess player since his teen years. The band will perform at the tournament from 11 am – 12:15 p.m. during event registration. There is no charge for the audience.

Perth Amboy Free Public Library Offers Home-bound Delivery Service
PERTH AMBOY – If you can’t make it to the library, the library can come to you! The Home-Bound Program is a resource delivery service offered to all Perth Amboy residents who are temporarily or permanently confined to their homes because of illness, age or physical disability. Care facilities and nursing homes are also welcome to take advantage of this program. The service is absolutely free to join and use! Residents who do not currently have a library card will be issued one after successful sign-up of the home-bound application. To sign up for service call the library at 732-826-2600.

Proprietary House Open
PERTH AMBOY – The Proprietary House, the last official Royal Governor’s residence still standing in the original 13 colonies, is open every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., for tea and tours. Tea is served in our atmospheric candle-lit wine cellar, and includes our delicious homemade desserts and assorted teas. A $10 donation, $5 for children under 12, covers both the tea and a mansion. Although the house is still in the process of being restored, some rooms have been newly decorated. Go back in time and learn about William Franklin and other residents of the house. It’s a perfect way to spend a pleasant afternoon. The gift shop is also open. Groups are welcome, although reservations are required for groups over six people. Historic Surveyor General’s Office
PERTH AMBOY – The Historic Surveyor General’s Office, which is adjacent to Perth Amboy City Hall, is now open for tours. At one time, this structure was the meeting place of the East Jersey Board of Proprietors & housed their records. Presently the Surveyor General’s Office is displaying artifacts from the John Watson (1685-1768) archaeological site along with other items from Perth Amboy’s rich history. Perth Amboy history DVDs are also available.
Free tours are available Tuesdays & Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Clubs, classrooms & groups are welcome. Come & view this newly restored building!

Volunteer Drivers Needed For Meals on Wheels Program
HIGHLAND PARK – Jewish Family Services of Middlesex County (JFS) is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver meals to homebound senior adults in the Highland Park area for the Kosher Meals on Wheels Program. The program delivers meals Monday – Friday mornings. A commitment of at least 2 days per month for regular volunteers is required. Also seeking substitute drivers who can fill in as needed throughout Middlesex County. Must have valid driver’s license. However, due to the rising cost of print publication, we are forced to now charge a small fee for community announcements in our print version. We will provide one complimentary short paragraph or “short” per event. After your event “short” is published for one week, there will be a $5.00 fee per week charge for each additional “short” published pertaining  to that particular event. For those who pay for a display ad, there will be no fee for additional shorts pertaining to the event in the paid display ad. To our regular loyal advertisers who hold community events, your “short” announcements will remain complimentary. Effective 1/1/16. Thank you.
