SOUTH AMBOY – The 2/18/15 South Amboy Council Meeting was an upbeat meeting. A resolution R-57 supporting, recognizing and honoring the service of Law Enforcement Officers was moved by Councilman Applegate and Seconded by Dato.

Comments were made by the Council and Mayor Henry. Henry said, “Something needs to be said and done about those who support us (speaking about Law Enforcement Officers). Those who put Police Officers in a bad light also puts them in danger.” Henry told those in attendance about two South Amboy Police Officers who responded to a call about an unconscious resident. Those Officers gave that person CPR until the First Aid Squad arrived. “This represents the good in the Officers and I want to thank them and Chief Lavigne.”

Mayor Henry cited Resolution R-56 which was a settlement agreement and release between the City of South Amboy and Amboy Aggregates and lower Main Street Development LLC.

Amboy Aggregates is a sand and gravel company that has been in litigation with South Amboy for many years. The land included a Waterfront Property that has been purchased for redevelopment. This will include residential as well as retail property.

At past meetings some residents were concerned about the small apartment units that would be built on this property and if that would be attracted to outside buyers.

Henry thanked City Attorney John Lanza for his due diligence for preparing an agreement on this property. “We are done with McCormick Sand and this resolution finally puts an end to this.”

Attorney Lanza said, “We have been working on this since January 1, 1987 when it was a big sand pile.” He cited the hard work that was done through the Mayors, the Councils and the City Engineer, Mark Rasimowicz.”

B.A. Camille Tooker gave kudos to former South Amboy Resident Vince Mackiel for constantly coming before the Council to fight for getting rid of the sand piles that was on the Amboy Aggregates property.

The Fire Department was also thanked for bringing a demo fire truck to show what was needed for the Fire Department. Tooker said, “There are two fire trucks in use that are very old. One was 31 years old and the other 28 years old.” This was verified by 2 members of the Fire Department sitting in the audience. One of the Firemen came up to thank the Mayor and the Council for purchasing the new fire truck.

Newly appointed Second Ward Councilman Reilly was to be sworn towards the beginning of the meeting shortly after roll call but it was delayed pending the arrival of his wife. Council President Mickey Gross decided to proceed with the meeting. After all the agenda items were addressed and the public was allowed to speak, it was decided to have Reilly sworn in. Reilly’s wife still hadn’t arrived. The Oath of Office was administered by Assemblyman Craig Coughlin to Reilly as Reilly’s niece held the bible. Reilly comes from a family that has served on  City Boards and Coughlin had served on these Boards with members of the Reilly family.
