I don’t think that I am an old prude. When the occasion demands, I stub my toe, I can employ salty language with the best of ‘em. Or the worst of ‘em! But I was jolted and sputtered in my breakfast coffee when I read the rude and vulgar and obscene words in the story of the Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice. Who I have just heard has been fired by the school. This is reality reporting carried to an extreme. Even Playboy magazine has never been known to employ such language.
As an army recruit I never heard a sergeant use such dirty words as reported in the Home News Tribune. They may have been tough and strict but not nasty or vulgar. When I applied for pilot training as a cadet we were trained by civilian instructors hired by the army air corps. My instructor was a brutal and nasty guy who freely used salty and profane language. As a timid teen age kid I was intimidated and scared. As a result I could not effectively perform the required precise maneuvers. As a result, before I could correct them, I was washed out. My dreams were shattered! Naturally I got drunk as a skunk! After I sobered up I applied for navigator training. Which suited me fine. I easily mastered the profession. And went on to serve my country in 3 international unpleasantries, namely World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and the civilian airlines..
Cussing a vulnerable student can easily hurt and damage the student. The same situation on the basketball players coached by Mike Rice. As the University canned Rice so will I write off the Tribune for this offensive reporting. It sure ain’t worth a buck a copy!
