COMMUNITY VOICE: State Street, Perth Amboy 1939

Rose Clark

Rose Clark, summer of 1939.

In the picture is my grandmother, Rose Clark, standing in front of our house on State Street (summer of 1939).

Beyond my Nanna is the Gulf Station. Notice the telephone booth sing next to the Gulf Sign; the next corner is State Street and Broad Street. Crest Tavern is on the corner. Next was Tavern is on the corner. Next was the A&P. Just a small market at that time.

Next was a Chinese Hand Laundry. Next came Casey’s Bakery. On the next corner was a Barber Shop and in the backroom was a card parlor where the men would play every night. Across the street is Amboy Florist which later moved to Smith Street. Next was a Candy and Stationary Store.

Next and very important to me was the Bicycle Shop. That is where my GrandPop got me my first Tricycle. You can’t see but Silks Drug Store was there. Yum, yum. Triple Dip Chocolate Soda for 5 cents.
