I was so glad to hear that our city officials have wisely decided to take action to preserve Perth Amboy’s Historic Elm Tree. Like so many, I cannot imagine City Hall outside the shadows of this majestic, towering Elm.
Last month, the Historic Elm was the subject of an e-mail message I received from friend and neighbor, John Dyke. I read his positive news about preserving the tree while visiting Bluffton, SC. Very shortly after reading John’s message, I came upon an adage posted in front of the little town’s landmark church. It was like a message from above … so aptly did it apply to Perth Amboy’s Historic Elm Tree that was then on my mind.
The following paraphrases the motto of Bluffton’s historic Church of the Cross, which I now “borrow” to describe Perth Amboy’s oldest inhabitant:
Rooted in the Past;
Sheltering the Present;
Reaching Out to the Future.
I hope Perth Amboy’s Historic Elm will flourish and grow for many years to come!
