Chief Douglas A. Sprague dies at 84

SAYREVILLE – Retired Police Chief Douglas A. Sprague, who led the Sayreville Police Department from 1984-1997, passed away at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was 84 years old.

A US Navy veteran, Chief Sprague was appointed to the Sayreville Police Department on June 18, 1952 serving in numerous capacities and was a Charter Member of Sayreville PBA Local 98. The capstone of his career was his appointment as Chief of Police on June 19, 1984. He retired after 45 years of service on July 1, 1997. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Janice, and sons Detective Douglas Sprague and Detective Sergeant Jeffery Sprague and their families.

He was interred at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, Maple Place, Keyport, NJ.

In remembering Chief Sprague, Chief of Police John Zebrowski said, “In his many years of service, particularly those as Chief he left an indelible mark on this department.”
